6 Types of Sand Used in Construction

Sand is an essential component of any construction site. Do you know the different types of sand commonly found on construction sites? Take a look at the photos below.

1. UTILITY SAND

– has a coarse texture
– contains a mixture of beige, tan, white, gray, and brown particles
– usually produced from crushing high-quality industrial quartz
– the uniform particles allow the sand to compact well

2. MASONRY SAND

– fine-grained
– pure type
– used in laying bricks, stones, or blocks
– A clean white line between bricks or blocks adds aesthetic appeal to homes, enhancing the outdoor environment.

3. CONCRETE SAND

– consists of granite rock, gneiss, or limestone
– has angular ganules and works best when mixed with cement
– can also be used in bedding pipes
– crushed in a quarry and filtered severally to remove huge fragments and large rocks

4. FILL SAND

– consists of extremely fine rock particles
– has an impressive compaction rating but is unfortunately susceptible to displacement and shifting
– attractiveness and affordability
– ideal when used in wet areas with drainage problems

5. INDUSTRIAL SAND

– high purity silica sand with controlled sizing
– It enhances strength and density while maintaining chemical properties of the binding system.
– It enhances and protects sealants, caulk, and epoxy compounds against corrosion and weathering.

6. CRUSHED STONE SAND

– contains no impurities
– widely tipped as the natural successor of river sand
– It is thoroughly crushed and tested before being used for construction, making it a type of M-sand
